Golden Egg at Office or Home!

Golden Egg at Office or Home!

This is an old story, Stephen Covey explained with the new paradigm in one of the best seller books: 7 Habits of Highly Effective People [Worth reading book]. Please pay attention to the story and below examples to implement and enjoy the golden egg.

This fable is the story of a poor farmer who one day discovers in the nest of his pet goose a glittering golden egg. At first, he thinks it must be some kind of trick. But as he starts to throw the Egg aside, he has second thoughts and takes it in to be appraised instead.

The egg is pure gold! The farmer can't believe his good fortune. He becomes even more incredulous the following day when the experience is repeated. Day after day, he awakens to rush to the nest and find another golden egg. He becomes fabulously wealthy; it all seems too good to be true.

But with his increasing wealth comes greed and impatience. Unable to wait day after day for the golden eggs, the farmer decides he will kill the goose and get them all at once. But when he opens the goose, he finds it empty. There are no golden eggs-and now there is no way to get any more. The farmer has destroyed the goose that produced them.

I suggest that within this fable is a natural law, a principle—the basic definition of effectiveness. Most people see effectiveness from the golden egg paradigm: the more you produce, the more you do, the more effective you are.

But as the story shows, true effectiveness is a function of two things: what is produced (the golden eggs) and the producing asset or capacity to produce (the goose).

If you adopt a pattern of life that focuses on golden eggs and neglect the goose, you will soon be without the asset that produces golden eggs. On the other hand, if you only take care of the goose with no aim toward the golden eggs, you soon won't have the wherewithal to feed yourself or the goose.

Parental version of goose and golden egg:

Suppose you want your daughter to have a clean room. Your daughter is a goose and the cleaning action is golden egg. She is a valuable asset to produce golden eggs.

But if your paradigm is focused on production, on getting the room clean, you might find yourself nagging her to do it. You might even escalate your efforts to threaten or yell, and in your desire to get the golden egg, you undermine the health and welfare of the goose (that is your daughter)

Bringing values and discipline in children is a good idea that is a golden egg, make sure the goose (your child) is enjoying it.

Manager/Lead version of goose and golden egg:

Assume, you are the lead or manager, you need to get work done from your team. Here work is a golden egg. Your team is goose.

If you keep your focus only on getting work (golden egg) and ignore the health and welfare of your team (goose), you get very less or least productive deliverables. And you will be projected as a bad leader.

If you are focusing only on team welfare and their comforts, by neglecting delivery of work. Organisation will eliminate you. As you are only feeding the goose and not producing golden eggs.

Learn to balance, else you lose the race!

Spouse version of goose and golden egg:

Root of all your success is: Succeed at home first! If you are not successful at home, you lose Interest, Peace and Happiness. You will be in disturbed mindset. With that mindset you have the possibility of experiencing a chain of failures.

To get success at home, you must follow these goose and golden egg principles. Happiness, peace, and cooperation are the golden egg. Your spouse is a goose.

It's your duty to keep the goose happy and healthy. If not, you will miss the golden egg. (i.e., Happiness, Peace, and cooperation)

Don't be greedy in getting only golden eggs (work and cooperation). Pay little attention to goose (subordinates, children and spouse relationships) health.

Corporate Guidelines on Golden Egg:

Your subordinates are not your servants or slaves, they are the beautiful assets who produce golden eggs. Treat them with respect. Because they are working for your success. Recognise and appreciate their hard work. Win their trust. (Ref: How to win trust)

Most of your subordinates may be much smarter than you. Listen to their views and ideas.

If Lead/Manager only projected on work (golden egg) by not recognising employee (goose) health and hard work, with no doubt he/she will be remembered as a worst leader. And in organizational employee review and surveys you have the possibility to receive least ratings and bad reviews on your leadership qualities.

Emotional Intelligence [EQ]

Emotional Intelligence [EQ]

Today’s big challenge of personal and professional life is; dealing with emotions. Human beings are emotional creatures, it’s important to understand and deal with emotions. To manage emotions, we need to learn emotional intelligence [EQ]. EQ is more important than IQ.

Thoughts and Emotions are parts of your stored memory.  Here are the definitions:

Thought: an idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in the mind.

Emotion: a strong feeling deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.

Emotions are very strong feelings, if you are disturbing anyone’s deeper emotions. Be ready to face consequences. Because most of the people are living like animals, if you trigger them emotionally then react like an animal. We are human being's, we have intelligence; if we use intelligence on every emotional trigger, we should respond and not react.

Example: Assume someone calls you a Dog, suddenly you jump on him like a real dog. In this case you are proving him. Because you reacted almost similar to a dog. If you use your EQ; you don’t react, you will respond. If someone calls you Dog, just think for a second, are you really a Dog? Your intelligence tells you that you are a human being. So, the person calling you as a Dog is either blind or mad,  just give a smile and move on. This I call as an EQ response. It upsets the other person and he will behave like a real dog.

Here is a great example, how Buddha used EQ:

Buddha was passing through a village. Some people were angry, very much against his teachings. They abused and insulted him. Buddha listened silently and said, "If you are finished, then allow me to move on. I have to reach the next village, and they will be waiting for me. If something is still remaining in your mind, then when I am passing back by this route, you can finish it."

They said, "We have abused you, insulted you. Are you not going to answer?"

Buddha said, "I will never react. What you do is up to you --- I will  never react, you cannot force me to do something. You can abuse me; that is up to you --- I am not a slave. I have become a free man. I act from my center, not from my periphery, and your abuse can touch only the periphery, not my center. My center remains untouched."

Air or wind can touch or disturb the tides or periphery of the ocean. Deep ocean remains stable and undisturbed. Learn to stay in deep. If you are living in the periphery, small air blows can disturb you.

So, Buddha said, “Now I am centered. Ten years before it would have been different; if you had abused me, then I would have reacted. But now I only act.”

Here is another example of EQ:

Here the dog is controlled by its tail; actually, the dog should control its tail. Similarly, don’t be a slave to your emotions, be the master to your emotions. Egg Example is the best one on EQ.

Emotional intelligence explained with Human Brain: (based on scientific study)

Look at the below image: emotions are marked at center of our brain, thinking or intelligence are at the forehead. Generally, all our emotions are triggered after receiving them thru Ears and Eyes. Unfortunately, most of the people not using intelligent areas of the brain. If you start practicing using intelligence, you will not react, you respond.

How to practice or start using EQ:

Remember, today most of your behaviors and actions are results of repeated practices. Start practicing of using intelligence, this erases earlier brain neurons paths and recreates new neural paths that will redirect every input to intelligence parts of the brain, before responding. If you keep on using regularly, these new brain neurons will become highways and your brain will automatically redirect everything to intelligence parts. [Observe most of the Sage’s and Swamiji’s; they use this EQ in most efficient way.]

Here are the simple practices, that will help you to redirect and use your intelligence over the emotional reactions:

  1. Someone behind you continuously honks at the traffic signal, instead of thinking bad about him and boil your emotions, use your intelligence. He could be illiterate or not cultured in a good environment and making these actions and you can’t teach him good behaviours in 1minute, so just relax.
  2. Kids are making a lot of noise, instead of thinking bad. Just imagine for a second, you were also doing more or less similar things when you were a kid.
  3. Someone driving rashly on the road, just laugh at him. Instead of feeling your emotions. This rashness is a cultured and consistent habit of that person, you are not here to correct everyone.
  4. Someone abuses you, think for a minute and respond. Stop reacting.
  5. Someone treats you in a very bad manner or some people are irritating you. Just think for a minute, if they get the same kind of parents, education, environment and learning as what you have, he or she might behave similar to you. Understand that, they lack opportunities or not matured like you.
  6. Choose every emotional trigger which is happening in your surroundings for your practice. Understand all are happening with some reason or purpose, simply nothing will happen. And self-evaluate yourself, how cool your emotions are in those situations and conditions.  Few examples are given below:
    • Sudden power cut.
    • Computer or mobile freaks out.
    • Online order not delivered on-time.
    • Sudden change in work.
    • Sudden change in environment.
    • Your vacation plan got cancelled.
    • Your friend keeps you waiting.
    • Your bike or car got an issue.
    • Meeting does not start on-time.
    • Getting trouble in joining a meeting.
    • Harsh email received from your co-worker or client.
    • Someone blaming you for other's mistakes.
    • Unexpected happenings.

“30 Minutes meditation in a day makes you master of Emotional Intelligence” [Ref: Meditation and EQ]

Benefits of Emotional Intelligence:

  1. It will avoid many personal and relationship issues.
  2. It helps you to handle difficult situations in your professional life.
  3. It helps you to build good and healthy relationships with clients and business.
  4. It helps you to make the right decision in the worst condition. (Personal and Professional)
  5. This is one of the most required soft skills in current days.

Here is a Final touch:

Dog is chasing this scooter guy, he parks the scooter, takes a stone and runs behind the dog. It runs away. Later he starts scooter, dog comes back and barks. Again, he parks and runs behind, the dog runs away. Again, he starts scooter, dog comes back and barks. Again, he parks and runs behind the dog. Now think and tell me?! Is he controlling the dog or dog controlling him!  Don’t allow dogs to control you…Use your emotional intelligence.

Look at me, not the shadow in water.

Look at me, not the shadow in water.

Most of the time we understand things and people by other's perceptions, understandings, views and beliefs. If you are one among them, it's not too late to stop that habit.

Every individual is unique in this world, how can you simply trust and believe other’s beliefs, views and perceptions, until you experience or sense it. [I know there are few exceptions like Coronavirus, Cyanide, poison, electric power and so on, we don’t need to experience them]

It happens to me several times, people come and tell, he is good, or he is bad. I never go with their opinions. Reason: I'm not saying they are wrong. They may be absolutely right, but the same is not true for me.

When I was leading a team in one of my previous company, I assigned some task to someone, who is not part of my team, that task was interdependent task from the other team member. Some people in my team told me. Vishnu, did you assign that task to him? He will never complete on-time. He may take minimum two to three weeks to address.

I just ignored my fellow member's suggestions or opinions; I went and spoke with him and requested his help. It’s amazing!  with-in two days he completed the given task, delivered and updated status to me.

In fact, several times I have assigned several tasks to him, every single time, he gave great importance to my requests and delivered things much earlier than my expectations. Neither I'm his reporting manager nor I used my official powers.

It's not an exaggeration, in his last day with that organisation, he came to my desk and informed me about his leaving. I wished him all the best.

One more thing happened with me in my previous office. Some tasks were pending for 6 months with lots of negative opinions and feedback from clients for the delay. When I took up the management role, I spoke with each individual and it happened; we delivered one of the long pending automation job within two to three months of time and received appreciation from the client. Same resources, same skills, same task? How was it possible? Don't listen to old stories and their views and opinions. Go fresh, be compassionate, consider, trust and respect all. Things will happen in a magical way.

Remember, every single story of other person is their own experience of life. Prejudice and assumptions are not good.

Let me give one example which I learned from spiritual teachings.

One Sage was living in a graveyard, and he was training and doing things, which are against society and culture. Because of his popularity, messages went to all the corners of the country.

That country was ruled by the King, his daughter got frustrated by hearing that news, as one of the Sage is bad with his lifestyles, culture and approaches. She informed her father as I will go and teach him a lesson. When she visited that graveyard, Sage explained 120 poems to her, which influenced her, and she settled at the graveyard by dancing and singing with him. After few days, King's wife feared for her daughter's absence and informed King. She took some soldiers to teach a lesson to that Sage and bring their daughter back. She reached the graveyard, sage explained 90 poems to her, she got influenced and settled at his place.

After few days, King really got confused by the happenings. He got worried with his daughter and wife’s absence, he decided to go and punish that Sage.

He reached Sage's place, Sage explained 30 poems to him, and King got influenced by it and thought to settling with him.

Out of curiosity, King reached Sage and asked him, I heard very bad stories about you, people outside are thinking you as a bad person. But in my experience, I have not found any such things with you, why?

Sage answered, he asked him to look at the still lake on full moon day and asked him, what are you seeing? King replied I see moon. Sage asked him to look at the sky and asked if both are the same or different? King replied as both are the same. Then Sage throwed a stone into the stilled lake and asked again, are you still seeing the same? King replied no, now moon is scattered and I can't see a clear moon in the Lake. Sage asked the king, how about the moon in the sky? King replied it's clear and perfect.

Sage told King, the things you heard about me were the reflection of the lake, many might have witnessed reflection of the moon, not the real moon.

Sage said, now you are seeing real me, all the bad news, stories and different opinions are just reflection of water, not the real moon.

Similarly, never go with people's opinions, it may be just a reflection. If someone is really forcing their opinions, there may be some selfishness or fear behind it. Better try to experience the real moon.

You may wonder why 120, 90, and 30 poems Sage used to teach. Experience of life matters, to make them realise the truth.

Good Story to know, why you should not listen to negative people: http://storyroute.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-deaf-frog.html

Below is a Moneys experiment of gossips and negativity:

Don't allow someone to fill your mind with their experiences, prejudice, gossips and assumptions, use your own intelligence and have your own experiences.

Examples: person who is standing under the coconut tree get hurt by coconut fall. It may not be true to you; you may get benefit from the coconut fall. Matter of fact one in a million get hurt, remaining all are benefited by coconut fall.

Life is very dynamic, don't believe or follow any static and historic guidelines. Life is like a river, no one ever possible crossed same river twice. Every second it changes to new, new curves, new force, new content, new sounds, new temperature, new colour, new design, and new look. How anyone can see the same river again, similarly every person on this earth is very dynamic and new.

Best way to understand or sync with someone:
1. Delete all your prejudice and be fresh.
2. Delete your EGO, it's not allowing you to see the real person.
3. Delete all your experiences and comparisons.
4. Just observe like a baby, as it treats all with the same respect and with no discriminations.
5. Delete your Religion, Caste, Colour, Position, Education, Wealth, and so on. Just be as you are a person with nothing and no identity, you have less possibility to hate someone.
6. Be true, be real, and be the same both inside and outside.
7. Stop listening to gossips and see real.
8. Learn to see; what you see not how you see. [how- is inclusion of your mind, what - is NO inclusions or comparisons of mind or history]

Most of your life decisions are under the control of other’s opinions. That's not good. Others give their operations based on their maturity, knowledge and experience. So, trust your own self.

Example: Someone call you Dog, someone call you God, you know you are human. Never ever give a space to listen history to understand the present. If you do so, you are biased with your understandings and you miss the reality. Prejudice is like poison. Poison kills you once, prejudice kills you ever second.

How to Win Trust

How to Win Trust

Today's biggest challenge and requirement is winning trust, both in personal and professional life.
Living in an environment where people don't trust you is almost equivalent to living in a hell.

If one earns trust at home or office, he/she is possible to live stress free life. Most of the people suffering with stress, failure, and problems is due to lack of trust too.

Winning Trust:
1. Trust is not a checklist. Fulfilling all your responsibilities does not create trust.
2. Trust is a feeling, not a rational experience.
3. We trust some people and companies even when things go wrong, and we don't trust others even though everything might have gone exactly as it should have.
4. A completed checklist does not guarantee trust.
5. Trust begins to emerge when we have a sense that other person or organization is driven by things other than their own self-gain.
6. With trust comes a sense of value—real value, not just value equated with money.
7. Value, by definition, is the transference of trust.
8. You can’t convince someone you have value, just as you can't convince someone to trust you.
9. You have to earn trust by communicating and demonstrating that you share the same values and belief.

Trust in Business/Professional life:
1. Leading, however means that others willingly to follow you—not because they have to, not because they are paid to, but because they want to. That's trust.
2. In turn, those who trust work hard because they feel like they are working for something bigger than themselves.
3. One culture is not better or worse than the other, they are just different. Understand this to trust them.
4. When you fill an organization with good fits, those who believe what you believe, success just happens.
5. In circus: the more he/she trusts the quality of the net, the more he/she will take personal risks to make his/her act better. The trust circus management provides him/her by providing a net is probably afforded to other performers too.
Soon all the performers will feel confident to try new things and push themselves further. Same applies to all the organizations.

6. Great organizations become great because the people inside the organization feel protected.

7. The strong sense of culture creates a sense of belonging and acts like a net.

8. Trust comes from being a part of a culture or organization with a common set of values and beliefs.

9. Trust is maintained when the values and beliefs are actively managed.

10. Never lie / Never misguide, honesty and truthfulness are main ingredient to create a trust.

12. If organization create trust in employees, will face least attrition rate. It's not how much they give, it's not how better they are, it's just how much trust they built.

Example: Lie is the root cause for all the distrust. If rain happens. What is the sign? Ground should be wet. You can't show dry soil/land and convince someone as heavy rains or water floods.

We are in technology world, you can erase your footprints, but not the digital footprints. And more over with social media and internet, we are all connected, being transparent is the only way or the right way to build trust.

If you learn to speak things which can be spoken with anyone or everyone, you will never come across a situation to hide your face. Be true to yourself. Be courageous, and learn to be clean both inside and outside, this is the best way to build and maintain trust.

Whom do you trust more?
  • Someone you know or someone you don’t know?
  • The waiter who tells you, "Everything on the menu is great?
  • The waiter who tells you to avoid the chicken role? Whom you trust?
  • Of course we trust the celebrity endorsement. A smile that encourages us to choose one car over another or one lipstick over another, because we trust those celebrities.

 Trust in life:
Many unpleasant and bad things happen in your life. You don't know how things are going to turn out. Don't make premature conclusions by listening to your mind. The more quite you are, the more you see things as they really are. When you see things as they are, your heart will be filled with gratitude and you will grow in wisdom. If those have not happened in your life, you are not what you are today.
Best story by Mooji, why we need have trust in life: Trust in Life and You will See

Real story of organization success:

Continental Airlines—the worst airline in the industry. In 1994, the year Bethune took over as the newest CEO (after ten CEOs in that decade), the company had lost $600 million and ranked last in every measurable performance category.
But all that didn't last long once Bethune arrived. The very next year Continental made $250 million and was soon ranked as one of the best companies to work for in America.

How Company turned: From Worst to Best?
  • SAME RESOURCE
  • SAME TOOLS
  • SAME PEOPLE

Bethune created trust in the organization and he knows the techniques of HOW and How to win the trust and confidence in employees.
